What causes male pattern hair loss?

  1. Family history
If you have a history of hair loss on either side of your family, you may have an increased risk for male pattern hair loss.
  2. DHT (dihydrotestosterone)
Men with male pattern hair loss have elevated levels of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in their balding scalps. The level of DHT is believed to contribute to the progressive shrinking of hair follicles and decrease in the number of visible hairs.

Imagine if a proven treatment was available…A treatment that reduces the amount of DHT in the scalp may be beneficial in the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Lowering the level of DHT may help stop hair loss, help restore shrinking hair follicles and regrow hair. Continue Reading

Some options when coloring your hair

Posted on 10 July 2009 by admin

Do you prefer permanent or semi-permanent color?

haircolorYour stylist is the best person to help you make this selection. However choosing one type of hair color over another depends on several factors. If you have more than 25 percent gray hair for example, your stylist may suggest permanent hair color to cover it. Image by House of Sims

If you want your hair lightened, permanent color is generally a “must.” Permanent hair color grows out before it washes out. But if you just want to experiment and try something different, you could try a temporary rinse that would darken blonde hair, or add highlights to darker shades.

For longer lasting color, your stylist may use a semi-permanent hair color which lasts through at least 6 shampoos. If hair is fragile or not in tip-top shape, a semi permanent or in between color generally will be better than permanent hair color.

In-between type color is between permanent and semi-permanent. It contains no ammonia and does not lift color, so it is as gentle as semi-permanent color, yet lasts almost as long as permanent color-up to 25 to 30 shampoos. The most stressful process on hair is a double process in which hair is bleached first then colored.

How does a hair perm actually work?

Posted on 10 July 2009 by admin

Hair is made of keratin, composed of long molecular chains within the cortex layer of hair. These chains form a twisted rope-like fiber which has a network of cross-bonds or links that provide stability, strength and elasticity to hair.

There are two types of bonds:

  • hydrogen bonds
  • cystine or sulphur bonds.

margePermanent waves change the hair from straight to wavy by breaking these cross bonds. When hair takes on its new shape, the bonds must be re-established for curl to be permanent.

The classic permanent wave solution or “cold wave” lotion is generally thioglycolic acid plus ammonia, which causes the cystine or sulphur bonds to be released. When hair is wrapped on the rod, this solution is applied. A certain amount of time is required for the hair to take on the shape and size of the rod. This is called “processing time”. The stylist must be able to determine how much time is needed to achieve the type of curl desired, otherwise hair can be underprocessed, resulting in curls that relax too soon or overprocessed, resulting in too curly or frizzy hair. Once the hair is “processed” the stylist applies a neutralizer while hair is still on the rods. Image by MrFlip

The neutralizer provides a dual chemical action, neutralizing and oxidizing which results in reforming the cystine bonds and the hydrogen bonds so that the hair stays curled. The neutralizer forms new hydrogen bonds to shrink or harden the cortex and cuticle layers of the hair. The cystine bonds are reformed by oxidations that occurs between the sulphur in the hair and the active oxygen atoms in the neutralizer. When the cystine bonds are reformed, the wave remains permanent.

After all the neutralizer penetrates the hair, hair is unwrapped carefully and rinsed thoroughly with water and now hair is ready to style. For best results, perms should be done by a salon professional.

Something about your hair conditioner

Posted on 29 June 2009 by admin

Today, there are thousands of conditioners in the market, all claiming to solve specific hair problems. Conditioners should add moisture, strengthen hair, make it shinier, untangle, smooth split ends, add fullness and more.

Conditioners work in a variety of ways. Some only works on the cuticle and others actually penetrate into the cortex for longer lasting results. These latter conditioners are called deep-penetrating treatments because they are used occasionally for therapeutic reasons.

Conditioners take a certain amount of time to penetrate the hair. After that time, there is no added benefit. Leaving a conditioner like a protein treatment in longer can actually do more harm than good by drying the hair out even more, so please do follow directions on the package or your stylist’s advice.

For those who have an oily scalp, use a gentle cleansing shampoo than apply a rinse out conditioner, for example like ion moisturizing treatment or professional prescription enforce. Working the conditioner well into the ends and rinse thoroughly.
