Maintain your nails for great looking hands

Posted on 28 July 2009 by Alice Smith

great nailsToday, well manicured nails are as much a part of good grooming as brushing ones teeth or combing the hair. Thanks to modern technology and continual improvements within the nail care industry, the art of manicuring can be at the finger tips of almost everyone. Image by +Angst

For natural nails, the basic routine should include a circle oil or cream and a professional nail strengthening treatment. It’s a good idea to have a medium and fine grit file. If you wear polish, you’ll need a basecoat, topcoat, polish remover, polish dryer and professional formula nail polish. If you don’t wear polish, use a nail buffer to maintain natural shine.

You can also treat yourself to manicure soak, a hot oil treatment or a paraffin wrap. If you choose to extend your nail length with tips, wraps, gels or sculptured nails, use products which contain botanical oils to moisturize hands and nails. Avoid products containing mineral oils, since they can cause nail extensions to lift. Basic items for nail grooming include

  • Contours Botanical Nail Oil
  • Beauty Secrets Dual Treatments Kit
  • Beauty Secrets Cushion White Files in Medium or fine grit
  • Beauty Secrets Nail Enamel Dryer Spray.

If you prefer absolutely perfect, medium to long nails every day, you’ll need a professional manicure once a month. If you prefer shorter length nails for an active lifestyle and you can do polish touch-ups at home. The faster your nails grow and the more abuse they can withstand, the more often you’ll need professional maintenance.

What is Brazilian / Boyzilian Wax

Posted on 24 July 2009 by Alice Smith

Brazilian or boyzilian wax means waxing the body hair around the pubic area. There are many brazilian shapes such as stamp shape, triangle shape, strip, square shape, heart shape and strip off. Refer to the image below:

  5. Hoochie Coochie All the Way can mask for 45mins
  6. Extraction 10mins
  7. Intensive Post Wax Serum Treament

Wax aftercare:-

  • No hot baths
  • No swimming or sunbathing
  • No heat or UV treatments like sunbeds or saunas
  • No tight clothing
  • No perfumed products including deodorant, anti perspirant, self tanner or make up.
  • No touching scrubbing or rubbing the area (unless you want a bacteria invasion)
  • No intensive exercise

Besides waxing the pubic area, there are still many parts of our body that can be waxed. After waxing, we can feel sexier and cleaner below. You will love it once you do it. There are two types of waxing. Hot wax and cool wax. I personally prefer hot waxing because it is not as painful.

Some options when coloring your hair

Posted on 10 July 2009 by Alice Smith

Do you prefer permanent or semi-permanent color?

haircolorYour stylist is the best person to help you make this selection. However choosing one type of hair color over another depends on several factors. If you have more than 25 percent gray hair for example, your stylist may suggest permanent hair color to cover it. Image by House of Sims

If you want your hair lightened, permanent color is generally a “must.” Permanent hair color grows out before it washes out. But if you just want to experiment and try something different, you could try a temporary rinse that would darken blonde hair, or add highlights to darker shades.

For longer lasting color, your stylist may use a semi-permanent hair color which lasts through at least 6 shampoos. If hair is fragile or not in tip-top shape, a semi permanent or in between color generally will be better than permanent hair color.

In-between type color is between permanent and semi-permanent. It contains no ammonia and does not lift color, so it is as gentle as semi-permanent color, yet lasts almost as long as permanent color-up to 25 to 30 shampoos. The most stressful process on hair is a double process in which hair is bleached first then colored.

How does a hair perm actually work?

Posted on 10 July 2009 by Alice Smith

Hair is made of keratin, composed of long molecular chains within the cortex layer of hair. These chains form a twisted rope-like fiber which has a network of cross-bonds or links that provide stability, strength and elasticity to hair.

There are two types of bonds:

  • hydrogen bonds
  • cystine or sulphur bonds.

margePermanent waves change the hair from straight to wavy by breaking these cross bonds. When hair takes on its new shape, the bonds must be re-established for curl to be permanent.

The classic permanent wave solution or “cold wave” lotion is generally thioglycolic acid plus ammonia, which causes the cystine or sulphur bonds to be released. When hair is wrapped on the rod, this solution is applied. A certain amount of time is required for the hair to take on the shape and size of the rod. This is called “processing time”. The stylist must be able to determine how much time is needed to achieve the type of curl desired, otherwise hair can be underprocessed, resulting in curls that relax too soon or overprocessed, resulting in too curly or frizzy hair. Once the hair is “processed” the stylist applies a neutralizer while hair is still on the rods. Image by MrFlip

The neutralizer provides a dual chemical action, neutralizing and oxidizing which results in reforming the cystine bonds and the hydrogen bonds so that the hair stays curled. The neutralizer forms new hydrogen bonds to shrink or harden the cortex and cuticle layers of the hair. The cystine bonds are reformed by oxidations that occurs between the sulphur in the hair and the active oxygen atoms in the neutralizer. When the cystine bonds are reformed, the wave remains permanent.

After all the neutralizer penetrates the hair, hair is unwrapped carefully and rinsed thoroughly with water and now hair is ready to style. For best results, perms should be done by a salon professional.

Some interesting facts about our comb

Posted on 10 July 2009 by Alice Smith

The comb like a hair pin has a history that goes back hundreds of years. This seemingly simple styling tool was used by Greeks and Romans who usually preferred ivory hair pins studded with jewels.

combIn fact the hair pin served a deathly dual purpose. Some were hollowed out to conceal poison and it is believed that a hair pin of this design was used by Cleopatra when she poisoned herself.

Thankfully today modern hair styling tools are designed solely for the purposes of grooming and styling the hair. And they have expanded much beyond the earliest combs and hair pins to the most sophisticated of implements.

Professional styling tools range from a multitude of brushes, combs, clamps, rollers and ratts, picks and pins.

Their usage is limited only by your imagination. The followings are tips on using the comb:-

1. Boar bristle brushes make hair shine because they pick up and distribute the hair and scalp’s natural oils along the hair shaft as well as pull dirt or dust particles off the hair.

2. Brushing stimulates circulation in the scalp bringing more blood to surface which may stimulate hair growth. The more often you brush, the more oils you distribute from your scalp to the hair strands which conditions and protect the hair. As a result, hair is stronger and healthier.
